Using the Retention screen to place your form

The Retention screen shows how far people really watch each video, and suggests the best moment to show your opt-in form.

Open it

  1. Go to WP Lead Player › Retention.
  2. Pick a video from the Video dropdown.

Retention isn’t the same as the Stats link under a video in Manage Videos. Stats opens the older Video Stats page for that video. Use Retention for the curve, the drop-off and the suggested form placement.

The four numbers

  • LOADED – times the video appeared.
  • PLAYED – viewers who pressed play.
  • FINISHED – viewers who watched to the end.
  • LEADS – sign-ups as a % of players.

These count viewing sessions, not hits. One person scrubbing back and forth, or reloading, is one viewer, so the numbers read lower – and truer – than tools that count every ping. Your own plays count too, so use a private window while testing.

The chart

How far viewers get shows how many viewers are still watching at each point (How far into the video). The suggested gate marker shows where the plugin recommends asking for an email.

The insights

  • Biggest drop-off – the single biggest fall in the curve, for example “1 viewers left around the 20% mark”.
  • Where to put the opt-in – the latest point still holding 60% of the people who pressed play. Ask later than this and you’re asking a smaller room. With only a handful of plays this is just noise, so ignore it until a video has at least 50 plays, and treat it as a starting point rather than an answer.

Move your opt-in in one click

Click the Move the opt-in to … button (it shows the suggested time). The opt-in moves to that point. If the opt-in is switched off for the video, this sets the position ready for when you turn it on.

How the figures are counted

Figures count distinct viewing sessions, so one person scrubbing back and forth is counted once. Raw viewing events older than 90 days are removed automatically.

The same four numbers and the same curve work for all three sources. Uploaded files and streams are tracked directly, while YouTube and Vimeo report their position through their own players. If a viewer blocks YouTube’s or Vimeo’s scripts, that view isn’t tracked.

The nightly summary of viewing data runs on WP-Cron, so WP-Cron needs to be working on your site.
