Helping your videos appear in Google with Video SEO

WP Lead Player can describe your videos to search engines, so they can show up in Google’s video results.

Switch it on

  1. Go to WP Lead Player › Settings.
  2. Under Video SEO, tick Describe videos to search engines.
  3. Click SAVE.

This adds VideoObject structured data to pages with your videos.

Get the most from it

  • Give each video a clear Video Title.
  • Add a startup thumbnail, which gives search results a picture to show.
  • Add a Captions file, which gives search engines text to read.
  • Check a page with Google’s Rich Results Test once it’s live.

What’s included

The VideoObject data carries the video’s Video Title, the video address (for an uploaded file) or embed address (for YouTube, Vimeo or a stream), the startup thumbnail if you’ve set one, the captions file if you’ve set one, and the upload date and description taken from the page the video sits on. Anything you haven’t filled in is left out rather than guessed.

Members-only videos

A video set to Logged-in users only still publishes its Video SEO data. It can appear in Google and lead visitors to a page that then asks them to log in. For a course seller that’s usually exactly what you want, but make it a deliberate choice. If you don’t want it, untick Video SEO under WP Lead Player › Settings (it’s a site-wide setting).
