Adding an opt-in form to a video

An opt-in form appears over your video and asks viewers for their email (and name, if you like). Every sign-up is saved in WordPress first, so you never lose a subscriber.

Before you start

You’ll need a video already set up (see Adding your first video).

Step 1: Switch on the opt-in form

  1. Open the video from WP Lead Player › Manage Videos, or start a new one in WP Lead Player › Add Video.
  2. Click the Opt-In tab.
  3. Set Include Opt-In Box to YES.

Step 2: Choose when it appears

Under Location, pick one:

  1. Beginning – before the video plays.
  2. Middle – partway through, so viewers get a taste first. Enter the exact point in the Seconds box that appears, for example 42.
  3. End – once the video finishes.

Not sure? The Retention screen (WP Lead Player › Retention) shows where people stop watching, which helps you pick the best moment (see Using the Retention screen to place your form).

Step 3: Decide what to ask for

  1. Fill in the Headline, Text and Button wording – for example “Enter your email and the rest of the video plays straight away.” Leave Button blank to use the default wording.
  2. Set the labels for the Name field and Email field.
  3. Set Allow Skipping: NO means viewers must sign up to keep watching; YES lets them close the form and carry on. If you allow skipping, set the wording in Skip link.
  4. Optional: add Small print under the form, such as a line about how you use their email or a link to your privacy policy.

Step 4: Pick a design

  1. Under Form design, choose Site default (Card) or one of the eight built-in designs: Card, Panel, left, Panel, right, Inline, Sheet, top, Sheet, bottom, Card, bold and Card, mono.
  2. Fine-tune the colours with Text Color, Opt-In Background, Opt-In Background Opacity and Opt-In Button Background.
  3. The form uses your theme’s font automatically and shrinks to fit small players.
  4. Want more control? Go to WP Lead Player › Form Designs, click New design, or pick Start from this on any of the eight designs. To use your brand colour for the button in every design, go to WP Lead Player › Settings and tick Use my brand colour for the button in every design under Brand colour.

Step 5: Save and test

  1. Click SAVE AND CLOSE (or SAVE AND CONTINUE EDIT).
  2. Open the page in a private/incognito window and sign up with a test email.
  3. Check the sign-up appears in WP Lead Player › Leads.

Good to know

  • Existing subscribers aren’t asked again. With Smart gating switched on in WP Lead Player › Settings (“Skip the opt-in for people who have already subscribed”), people already on your list skip the form. That’s why you may not see the form yourself after testing – use a private window.
  • Test your wording. Tick Split test (“Test a second version of this wording”) and fill in Headline (version B) and Text (version B) to run two versions side by side.
  • Send to your email tool. To pass subscribers on to Zapier, Make, n8n or your own system, see Sending subscribers to your email tool.
