Resetting your browser to test like a new visitor

Why the form stops appearing for you

WP Lead Player remembers three different things in your browser. They make the plugin feel polished to a real visitor, and they can be maddening for the person testing it. Sign up once with your own email and the form won’t ask you again. Watch a video and it remembers your volume. Land on a split test and it keeps you on the same version for good, so your results aren’t polluted by one person seeing both.

All three live in your browser, not on your site, so nothing you change in WordPress clears them.

The one-step answer

Open the page in a private or incognito window. It has none of the three, so you’re a brand new visitor every time, and closing the window throws it all away again.

  • Chrome and Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N, or Cmd+Shift+N on a Mac.
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac.
  • Safari: Cmd+Shift+N.
  • iPhone: tap the tabs button and switch to Private. Clearing data for one site on iOS is buried and moves between versions, so a private tab is the route worth using.

If you’re testing repeatedly, this is the method. The rest of this article is for when you need your normal window back to its original state.

Clearing it properly: all three at once

Clearing cookies on its own is not enough, and this catches people out. Your split-test version and your volume setting aren’t cookies – they’re stored separately, and a cookie-only clear leaves them behind. You’d still be shown the same version of your own split test and wonder why it looks broken.

The quickest way to clear everything for one site is the browser’s developer tools, which has a single button for exactly this:

  1. Open the page, then press F12 (Cmd+Option+I on a Mac).
  2. In Chrome or Edge, go to the Application tab, choose Storage in the left-hand list, and click Clear site data.
  3. In Firefox, go to the Storage tab, right-click your site under Cookies and under Local Storage, and choose Delete All.
  4. In Safari, turn on the Develop menu first (Safari › Settings › Advanced), then choose Develop › Show Web Inspector and open the Storage tab.

Reload the page afterwards. One click clears all three stores and touches nothing else on your computer.

Clearing it through the browser settings instead

If you’d rather not open developer tools, use the settings. These menus move between browser versions, so treat the wording as a guide:

  • Chrome: three-dot menu › Settings › Privacy and security › Third-party cookies › See all site data and permissions, search for your site, then delete it.
  • Edge: three-dot menu › Settings › Privacy, search, and services › Cookies › See all cookies and site data, search for your site, then delete it.
  • Firefox: click the padlock in the address bar on your own site › Clear Cookies and Site Data. Or Settings › Privacy & Security › Cookies and Site Data › Manage Data, search, Remove All Shown, then Save Changes.
  • Safari on a Mac: Safari › Settings › Privacy › Manage Website Data, search for your site, then Remove.

These routes clear the cookies and site data for that site, which signs you out of it. If you clear data for your own WordPress site, you’ll be logged out of the admin as well. That’s harmless but surprising.

What not to do

  • Don’t clear everything for all sites. You’ll sign yourself out of every site you use, just to test one video.
  • Firefox’s Forget About This Site also deletes your history for it. The cookie-and-site-data route above is the narrow one.
  • Don’t assume closing the browser is enough. It clears the “already seen the form on this page” memory, but not the year-long “already subscribed” marker, and not your split-test version.

If you deleted your test lead too

Removing a lead from WP Lead Player › Leads doesn’t clear anything in your browser – the two are unrelated. Clear the browser as well, or you’ll still be treated as a subscriber.
