Choosing where to put your opt-in

When your opt-in form appears makes a big difference to how many people sign up.

Early versus late

  • Early asks reach more people, but they haven’t seen much yet, so there’s less trust.
  • Later asks reach fewer people, but those still watching are warmer and more likely to sign up.

The right moment is usually just before the point where lots of viewers leave.

Asking at the very beginning

A form at the Beginning asks people to sign up before they’ve seen anything. Combined with autoplay, it’s usually the lowest-converting arrangement. Use it only when the video itself is the reward, for example a members’ training.

Let the Retention screen suggest a moment

Go to WP Lead Player › Retention and pick the video. The Where to put the opt-in insight shows the latest point still holding 60% of the people who pressed play. Ask later than that and you’re asking a smaller room.

Click Move the opt-in to … to move the form there in one click.

Don’t trust it too soon

With only a handful of plays, the suggestion is noise. Ignore it until the video has at least 50 plays, and treat it as a starting point rather than an answer. Remember your own test plays count too.

Then test it

Try a different position or different wording and compare. A split test on the wording is built in – see Split testing your opt-in wording.
