Skipping the opt-in for existing subscribers (smart gating)

Nobody likes being asked for their email twice. Smart gating skips the opt-in form for people who’ve already subscribed.

Switch it on

  1. Go to WP Lead Player › Settings.
  2. Under Smart gating, tick Skip the opt-in for people who have already subscribed.
  3. Click SAVE.

Smart gating only skips the opt-in form; it doesn’t switch a call to action on. If you’d like subscribers to see something instead, set up a Call to Action on the video too (see Adding a call to action button).

Good to know

  • How subscribers are recognised: in two ways. When someone signs up, a marker is saved in their browser for a year. It’s specific to that browser, so it doesn’t follow them to another device and is lost if they clear their cookies. If they’re logged in to your WordPress site, their account email is also checked against your leads, which does work across devices.
  • Testing: once you’ve signed up yourself, you won’t be asked again in that browser. Test in a private or incognito window (see Resetting your browser to test like a new visitor).
  • Separate from “already seen the form”: a visitor who has seen the form but not signed up is only remembered for that page until the browser closes, so the same video on another page will still show the form.

Still stuck? Open a ticket on the support page on ABC and a real person will help.
